This year’s Wesak celebration was truly inspiring. What made it so special wasn’t just the activities or the beautiful setup, but the collective spirit of selfless service. From the Sangha members to all the behind-the-scenes volunteers and the supportive public — each person played a vital role in making this celebration meaningful.
As Most Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Maha Thera shared, the success of Wesak comes from the spirit of giving — serving with a sincere heart and expecting nothing in return. “We are here to serve, not to seek return. Be happy to serve.” This simple yet profound teaching touched many hearts. Venerable also advised the volunteers to always keep the heart of gratitude and appreciation, reminding them that it is through serving with a thankful heart that true joy and peace are cultivated.
One of the most moving aspects was seeing how a public space could be transformed to feel like a sacred temple. A highlight was the traditional Sri Lankan lantern, carefully handcrafted over more than a month by a master artisan and members of the Sangha. Its intricate beauty symbolized both devotion and unity, lighting up the entire celebration.
Throughout the day, the atmosphere was further uplifted by several performances of the Sri Lankan Kandyan welcome dance, which captivated the audience with its vibrant rhythm and cultural grace. This traditional performance added joy and elegance to the celebration.
The celebration began with the beautiful Sri Lankan Kandyan welcome dance, followed by the Buddha Jayanti exhibition, which included activities such as bathing the Buddha, sutra copying, learning about the Buddha’s life story, and discovering Buddhist heritage.
No matter where we served—be it food distribution, ushering, guiding the crowd, rushing between tasks, or tidying up the environment—everyone gave their very best. Each person played a role in creating a space that felt comfortable, serene, and welcoming to all who came.
Many members of the public shared how touched they were. Some said they felt a deep sense of peace, while others said the environment brought back childhood memories of temple visits. For many, this Wesak was not just a celebration — it was a personal spiritual experience.
This reflects the true nature of Dhamma — it is not limited to temples or scriptures. As Ven. Saranankara reminded us: “Dhamma is in our lives. It can be practised anywhere — in how we think, speak, and act.” Every kind act, every effort made, every mindful moment — this is Dhamma in action.
We are deeply grateful to all the volunteers and supporters. Your contribution created not just an event, but an atmosphere where many could reconnect with the Buddha’s teachings.
May the sense of inspiration you felt this Wesak become a beautiful memory in your heart.
May it encourage you to continue serving the Sasana with joy and compassion.
Let us walk together on the Buddha’s path with faith, gratitude, and loving-kindness.
Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!
