The Wesak Eve celebration year 2025 concluded beautifully with an inspiring Dhamma sermon by Venerable Ridigama Wanaratana Thero. Bhante reminded us of the deeper meaning behind the celebration of Wesak — it is not just a ritual, but an opportunity to reflect and cultivate wisdom and compassion.
Venerable highlighted two types of offerings in Buddhism: material offering and spiritual offering.
While we are familiar with material offerings — such as flowers, candles, requisites to the Sangha, or tying blessing strings — these acts serve as a bridge to deeper spiritual offerings. We should not remain attached to material forms.
A flower is beautiful, yet it fades and withers after a few hours or days — a reminder of impermanence.
When we tie a blessing string, does the string itself give us protection? No — but it represents the Triple Gem and carries the genuine blessing of the Sangha. When we see it on our wrist, it reminds us:
“The Buddha is with me. The Dhamma is with me. The Sangha is with me.”
Whenever obstacles arise in life — anger, jealousy, or doubt — we can look at the string and remember the Buddha’s teachings. By recalling the Dhamma, we abandon negative thoughts and actions. Ultimately, it is this wisdom that protects and guides us.
Venerable also shared a teaching from a sutta:
When crossing a river, we use a raft. Once we cross, we don’t carry the raft on our shoulders — we let it go.
Similarly, material offerings are tools that help us grow spiritually; we should not cling to them.
The Buddha taught four ways to cultivate spiritual growth and become better human beings:
1. Refrain from negative actions — what we dislike, we should not do to others (e.g., gossip).
2. Cultivate wholesome actions — fill our lives with good thoughts, speech, and actions, leaving no space for negativity.
3. Recognise and abandon unwholesome deeds.
4. Strengthen and stabilise our good practice.
Following the Dhamma sermon, Bhante led us in the light passing ceremony, a profound symbol of sharing wisdom and compassion.
Devotees mindfully received the flame from the venerable Sangha members, symbolising the transmission of the inner light of understanding. With reverence, they passed the light to fellow friends, holding the intention of spreading peace and loving-kindness.
Keeping this noble thought in mind, everyone walked mindfully and respectfully, chanting Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhassa — paying homage to the Blessed One.
This act symbolised the dispelling of ignorance and the spreading of wisdom, compassion, and peace — from one heart to another. The light we carried outward also reflected the inner light we strive to nurture within ourselves.
As the flame was passed from hand to hand, it symbolised the light of wisdom — the timeless teaching of the Buddha — being transmitted from generation to generation, from one person to another, illuminating lives and inspiring the path of awakening.
We continue this blessing with the aspiration to illuminate and share peace and understanding with all beings around us.
The evening concluded with a sense of deep connection to the Dhamma, gratitude to the Sangha and volunteers, and the aspiration to continue cultivating wisdom and compassion in our lives.
