Under the insightful guidance of Chief Reverend Bootawatte Sri Saranankara Maha Thera, our retreat was a profound journey into understanding the nature of the mind and the cultivation of human qualities. Venerable reminded us that while everyone has their own unique mind, only we can truly understand and develop it. The highest achievement, he shared, is the cultivation of virtues and mental clarityโqualities that transcend this life and carry forward into the next.
This retreat also struck a deep chord in reminding us of the importance of gratitude and appreciation. We were encouraged to reflect on the immeasurable kindness of our parents, those who have supported us throughout our lives, and Mother Nature, who sustains us in every moment. Gratitude opens the heart, fostering a spirit of humility and interconnectedness.
Equally important is the act of seeking forgiveness and letting go. Letting go of anger, resentment, and attachments brings liberation, allowing the mind to rest in peace and clarity. By forgiving others and ourselves, we make space for growth, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Mindfulness does not end with the retreat. Venerable reminded us to carry this awareness into our daily lives, embracing mindfulness in every actionโwhether walking, sitting, lying down, or eating. As the Buddha taught in the Satipaแนญแนญhฤna Sutta:
โGacchanto vฤ gacchฤmฤซโti pajฤnฤti; แนญhito vฤ แนญhitomhฤซโti pajฤnฤti; nisฤซno vฤ nisinnomhฤซโti pajฤnฤti; sayฤno vฤ sayฤnomhฤซโti pajฤnฤti.โ
(โWhen walking, one knows, โI am walking.โ When standing, one knows, โI am standing.โ When sitting, one knows, โI am sitting.โ When lying down, one knows, โI am lying down.โโ)
This retreat was not just a pause but a beginningโa call to deepen our awareness, express gratitude, and practice mindfulness in every moment. May we continue to nurture the seeds of wisdom and compassion planted during this retreat, living in harmony with ourselves, others, and the world around us.
