The recent 8-day mindfulness journey retreat at BSF Hulu Langat, held from July 23-30, 2024, offered profound insights into mindfulness. Led by Most Venerable Bootawatte Sri Saranankara Maha Thera, Venerable Vijithapura Gunaratana Thero, and Bhikkhu Pariyano, the program aimed to deepen the understanding and application of Dhamma in daily life.
Most Venerable Saranankara emphasized mindfulness, urging participants to attune to their minds and cultivate wholesome actions by recognizing and eliminating unwholesome ones. Venerable Gunaratana discussed the Buddha Dhamma, focusing on human nature and the qualities of the Buddha, and highlighted the importance of understanding the mind. Bhikkhu Pariyano skilfully guided the participants to experience and realise how important it is to maintain oneโ€™s mindfulness in life, with calm mind to deal with different circumstances.
Venerable Saranankara emphasing the significance of focus and determination in practice. He underscored the value of compassion and gratitude, particularly towards parents, reflecting the Buddha’s teachings on parental love.
“Satti,” a Pali term meaning “mindfulness” or “awareness,” is central to Buddhist practice. One key teaching of the Buddha is to โ€œsee things as they are,โ€ recognizing the impermanent, unsatisfactory, and non-self nature of all conditioned things. This insight, gained through Vipassana meditation, helps overcome ignorance (Avijja), the root cause of suffering (Dukkha), leading to liberation (Nirvana).
Practicing mindfulness helps individuals observe their thoughts, emotions, and sensations with clarity and equanimity, fostering greater understanding and liberation from suffering. The journey encouraged participants to continue on the path toward realizing the true nature of the mind and appreciating the practical application of Dhamma in life.
