The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a date of great importance in the Island’s calendar.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Sinhala & Tamil New Year, generally known as Aluth Avurudda (Aluth Avurudhu\u201d in Sinhala and \u201cPuththandu in Tamil) in Sri Lanka, is the new year of the Sinhalese and Tamil people in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Sinhalese and Tamil New Year is a national festival which has been celebrated for centuries. The most pronounced areas of the New Year festivities are food, games and the rituals of goodwill.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest and spring.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The custom of offering betel to parents and elders symbolises the act of paying gratitude. The children in turn receive blessings from parents. The sense of goodwill and friendship among relations and friends is also seen during the festival time.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The new year games can be categorised as indoor and outdoor games. Some of the indoor games are bello (sea shells) and kaju (cashew nuts). The outdoor games are havari hengima (hiding the wig), chaggudu and kotta pora (pillow-fighting), kathuru oncilla , ankeliya , olinda keliya, eluvan keliya, mevara sellama, raban upatha, buhu keliya, muthi gesilla, rena dela del, muthu keliya, onchili varam and mee sellama.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Celebrated by most Sri Lankan one form or another, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year involves the young and the old, and goodwill that strengthens friendships, community ties and has even produced many entertainment activities.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For the Sinhalese, Aluth Avurudda begins with families improving their homes – thoroughly cleaning, even perhaps painting. A few days before the festival, traditional food items are prepared in lieu of the celebrations.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u2028Tamil customs are a little different. Before the rituals begin, the entrance of the house is purified with saffron water. Intricate designs called kolam, made of rice flour – a neat drawing of colourful curved loops, drawn around a pattern of dots – decorate the floor.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u2028On the ultimate day of the old year or Parana Avurudda, the Sinhalese take a herbal bath, prior to which the head is anointed with predetermined auspicious oils. This year the juice of Kohomba (neem) leaves will be applied on the head by a senior Buddhist priest at the temple – or, if at home, an elderly relative – with blessings for health and longevity. Rituals are a harbinger of good luck.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u50e7\u4f3d\u7f57\u8bed\u548c\u6cf0\u7c73\u5c14\u8bed\u7684\u65b0\u5e74\uff0c\u901a\u5e38\u88ab\u79f0\u4e3a\u65af\u91cc\u5170\u5361\u7684\u50e7\u4f3d\u7f57\u8bed\u4e2d\u7684Aluth Avurudda\uff08Aluth Avurudhu\uff09\u548c\u6cf0\u7c73\u5c14\u8bed\u7684\u201c Puththandu\u201d\uff0c\u662f\u65af\u91cc\u5170\u5361\u50e7\u4f3d\u7f57\u4eba\u548c\u6cf0\u7c73\u5c14\u4eba\u7684\u65b0\u5e74\u3002\u65af\u91cc\u5170\u5361\u7684\u50e7\u4f3d\u7f57\u8bed\u548c\u6cf0\u7c73\u5c14\u8bed\u65b0\u5e74\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5168\u56fd\u6027\u7684\u8282\u65e5\uff0c\u5df2\u6709\u6570\u767e\u5e74\u7684\u5386\u53f2\u3002\u65b0\u5e74\u5e86\u795d\u6d3b\u52a8\u4e2d\u6700\u663e\u7740\u7684\u65b9\u9762\u662f\u98df\u7269\uff0c\u6e38\u620f\u548c\u5584\u610f\u4eea\u5f0f\u3002<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u6839\u636e\u50e7\u4f3d\u7f57\u4eba\u5360\u661f\u672f\uff0c\u65b0\u5e74\u662f\u4ece\u592a\u9633\u4ece\u53cc\u9c7c\u5ea7\u7684\u7c73\u5a1c\u00b7\u62c9\u5e0c\u4e9a\uff08Meena Rashiya\uff09\u5230\u767d\u7f8a\u5ea7\u7684\u739b\u838e\u00b7\u62c9\u5e0c\u4e9a\uff08Mesha Rashiya\uff09\u79fb\u5f00\u7684\u3002\u8fd9\u4e5f\u6807\u5fd7\u7740\u6536\u6210\u548c\u6625\u5929\u7684\u7ed3\u675f\u3002<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
