【Maha Karuna Buddhist Society Malaysia】25 September 2026 | Under the Full Moon: Dhamma, Loving-Kindness and Togetherness
On the night of the Mid-Autumn full moon, devotees gathered at Maha Karuna Vihara to pay homage and make offerings to the Triple Gem. They then circumambulated the stupa in the Buddha Relics Hall, recited homage to the Buddha as they walked with steady steps and mindful hearts.
Afterwards, everyone gathered in the Main Shrine Hall for chanting and a Dhamma sermon by the Abbot, Chief Reverend Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera, with Mandarin translation by a volunteer.
Chief Reverend shared that human beings have great potential and the ability to think and discern. Understanding our own minds can help us grow in our practice. He encouraged everyone to take three steps: gain knowledge, reflect and analyse, and put what we learn into practice.
Knowledge alone is not enough. We must consider whether what we learn is sound and whether we can apply it in daily life. Through reflection and analysis, we begin to develop wisdom; through meditation and practice, that wisdom grows.
Speaking about the nature of the mind, Chief Reverend observed that it cannot easily be assigned a fixed location. When we recall an experience from ten or twenty years ago, our thoughts can seem to return to that moment in an instant. Thoughts transform, change quickly and can be drawn towards negativity. Yet we have the capacity to train our minds. Those who understand these qualities of the mind devote themselves more diligently to learning and practice. By becoming aware of our thoughts, we can gradually cultivate kindness and wisdom.
The talk was followed by loving-kindness meditation. Together, we extended goodwill to all beings, near and far: May all beings be well and happy.
The evening ended with refreshments and mooncakes. Sharing the moonlit night and the Dhamma together strengthened our friendship in the Dhamma and left us with warm memories.
