From the 28th to the 30th of June 2023, a momentous event unfolded within the sacred grounds of Ridi Viharaya, a Buddhist temple with a rich heritage spanning over 2,200 years, located in Ridigama, Sri Lanka. It was the inaugural Maha Karuna Dhammaduta Workshop, a resounding success that brought together exceptional young scholars who had excelled in the national Oriental Examination.
The workshop commenced with profound words of wisdom from two eminent monastic figures. The Chief Reverend Bootawatte Sri Saranankara Maha Thera, founder and Spiritual Advisor of Maha Karuna Buddhist Society, and Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sidhhartha Buddha Rakkhitha Maha Thera, the esteemed Incumbent Chief monk of Ridi Viharaya, graciously imparted their guidance to the participants.
Over the course of two enlightening days, the workshop delved into the cultivation of soft skills and values, providing the young monks with invaluable tools for effective propagation of the Dhamma beyond borders. Distinguished senior scholar monks, who have made remarkable contributions to the dissemination of Buddhist teachings in foreign lands, were invited to share their knowledge and experiences with the aspiring junior monks. These senior scholars were also recipients of the study tour in Malaysia, sponsored by the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society, in recognition of their exceptional performance in the Sri Lankan national Oriental Study examination.
Guided by Sister Yee Shin, the workshop embodied the noble vision of the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society’s founder, who consistently champions and supports young Sangha members in their pursuit of Buddhist studies and proficiency in Pali and Sanskrit languages. The Monk Education Center in Sri Lanka, with its comprehensive curriculum spanning an average of eight years, stands as a beacon of knowledge, offering the only platform in the world that provides a comprehensive understanding of the Buddha’s teachings during his era, in both Pali and Sanskrit.
Gratitude abounds for the esteemed members of the Sri Lankan Maha Sangha, including Ven. Wanapitiye Wajirabuddhi Thero, Ven. D. Buddharakkhitha Thero, Ven. Aparekke Siri Sumana Thero, Ven. P. Damithasara Thero, Ven. Keembiye Anuruddhasiri Thero, and Ven. Meetiyagoda Buddhananda Thero, who wholeheartedly dedicated their time and expertise to guide the junior Sangha community.
The profound compassion and unwavering encouragement of Most Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Maha Thera and Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sidhhartha Buddha Rakkhitha Maha Thera towards the younger generation serve as a beacon of inspiration. Finally, our heartfelt appreciation extends to Venerable Ridigama Wanaratana Thero for his steadfast support of this invaluable program.
