The Dragon Boat Festival was established to commemorate Qu Yuan, a patriotic literary statesman in ancient China. On the Dragon Boat Festival, the Chinese community will have folk customs such as eating rice dumplings, spreading realgar, inserting wormwood, and so on. The fifth month of the lunar calendar is called the “five poison month”, so these folk customs also have the meaning of eliminating poison and avoiding evil.
In Buddhism, there are also five poisons that Buddhist disciples should always remember to get rid off. They are: greed, hatred, ignorance, slowness, and suspicion.
They exist in our body, speech and mind, which brings us worries and uneasiness. If we can get rid of these “five poisons”, we will stay away from suffering, gain wisdom, and see the true nature of mind.
On the Dragon Boat Festival, practicing Dharma, share the blessings with oneself, family, friends, and sentient beings, this is the greatest significance of the Buddha’s disciples on the Dragon Boat Festival.
The charitable are blessed ; the virtuous, happy.
